Snacks, Dips and Things to Bring

These are the recipes you need at short notice and for other people. That makes two things matter that almost never do elsewhere: how well they scale, and whether they survive being carried somewhere.

A dip that separates in the car is a different recipe from one that does not, and the card will not tell you which you have.

What makes these different to organise

  • They scale by headcount, and the published servings are usually meaningless for a party.
  • Serving temperature decides half of them. A dip that is good warm and bad cold needs that noted.
  • Most can be made ahead, which is the entire reason to have this collection, but recipes rarely say how far ahead.
  • Transport is a real constraint. Note what travelled and what did not.

How to build it

  1. Note how far ahead you actually made it and whether that was fine.
  2. Record whether it travelled well. That is the thing you will want to know at short notice.
  3. Scale by people rather than by servings.
  4. Keep the ones that need no oven separate. They are the ones you can make anywhere.

Frequently asked questions

How far ahead can I make a dip?

It varies more than recipes admit, and dairy-based ones often separate. Note how far ahead you made yours and how it held, since that is the detail you will need next time under pressure.

How do I scale a snack recipe for a party?

By headcount rather than by the published servings, which are usually set for a meal rather than a table of things to pick at.
